Chiropractic for Carpal Tunnel

  • Overview

Carpal Tunnel is a compression of the Median nerve that can result in a feeling of numbness, tingling or weakness in your hand , especially the thumb, pointer finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger. The Median nerve comes off the spinal cord and goes down your arm and through a tunnel in the wrist, called the Carpal Tunnel, along with tendons that are for moments of you hand. However, this is not the only location the Median nerve can be compressed. It can also be compressed when coming off of spinal cord in the intervertebral foramina or in the axilla (armpit). It could also be compressed in more that one place which is know as Double Crush Syndrome. The condition is becoming more prevalent every year mainly because of the increased use of technology.

  • Symptoms

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel could include:
    – Numbness in your hand, wrist or forearm
    – Tingling, like your hand is falling asleep, in your hand, wrist or forearm
    – Weakness, especially when trying to pinch an object between your thumb and pointer finger
    – Symptoms may increase with certain movements of the hand or neck

  • Causes

The reason that Carpal Tunnel is becoming more prevalent is because it is most commonly an overuse injury; such as typing or repetitive hand movements for long periods of time. The overuse can cause inflammation which can cause compression of the nerve overtime. Other less likely causes of Carpal Tunnel can include Hypothyroidism, Pregnancy, Arthritis or Diabetes

  • Therapy

The therapy to treat Carpal Tunnel will include Chiropractic Adjustments of the cervical spine and most likely of the wrist. Soft tissue techniques will also be employed if you have tight musculature in the your arm. Exercises such as Nerve Flossing are also great techniques that you can do at home to help the healing process.
