Chiropractic for Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are injuries to the ligaments that connect bone to bone and are among the most common injuries in the United States with about 25,000 occurring daily. The ligament that is most commonly injured is the Anterior Talofibular Ligament which is on the outside part of your ankle. It is injured in Inversion (inward rolling) sprains which are much more common that Eversion (outward rolling) sprains. Ankle sprains are graded on a scale of 1-3 with 3 being a complete tear of the ligament.
Some of the symptoms you may experience are:
– Ankle pain, which can be mild to severe
– Difficulty moving the ankle
– Instability of the ankle
The most common cause of a ankle sprain is a previous ankle sprain. This is because the ligaments become more lax with each sprain and causes your ankle to become unstable. Other causes of ankle sprains include playing sports that require a quick change in direction (football, basketball), wearing high heals and wearing old or loose fitting shoes.
It is important for you to be evaluated to determine the extent of the injury because treatments may vary. With grade 1 & 2 ankle sprains the most common therapy involves the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) Protocol which you should do at home. One the swelling and pain has decreased the Chiropractor will most likely manipulate your ankle and give you proprioceptive exercises such as standing on a wobble board. This will decrease the chance of you having a reoccurring sprain.
